The main work in this programme is Brahms’ wonderful Sonata for Cello and Piano in E minor which showcases the full range of his talent and stylistic ability as a composer. The opening movement is restless yet lyrical, the slow second movement emulates a graceful Baroque minuet and the finale is an energetic fugue based on a motif by Bach.
