Elspeth and violist Alexa Beattie present Sally Beamish’s viola sonata, which was originally commissioned by Haddington Concert Society in 2001 and inspired by the life of Clara Schumann. They will precede it with an arrangement of Schumann’s famous song cycle, Frauenliebe und -leben.
Brahms and Schumann were close friends, and Brahms’ viola sonatas are among his best-known chamber works. The suite by Falla is influenced by songs from different regions of Spain, and return us to the theme of song which opens this programme.
